A walk in the Rivelin Valley
November 18, 2012
Sunday afternoon walk in the Rivelin Valley, followed by a visit to our current fave farm shop. When Sheffield had a large cutlery industry, much of the work being done by small home industry piece work, the valley was full of polishing and sharpening wheels. These were driven by a succession of water wheels and the valley now consists of a series of artificial pools made to drive the wheels and the stonework that supported them. Sadly the industry has now gone leaving, I suspect, a much more pleasant walk than would have been possible 100 years ago.
There is a conservation group www.rivelinvalley.org.uk and if you are interested (saddened?) by industrial archaeology I recommend a visit.
Oh and a couple of gateposts thrown in :)
