Santiago, Noches Tres
February 26, 2012
On our last night, we took the funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. What a view of the city. We sampled the local popular fruit drink - sweet with apricots, barley and god knows what else. The last funicular back down the mountain left at 8:00 but alas, the sun was not ready to set at 8:00. We decided to throw caution to the wind, stay for the sunset and plead ignorance and beg for a ride with someone who had driven a car up. And, that was almost a very bad decision. Taxis? No mas. We asked the 1 car that was leaving if we could get a ride but they had 7 people - 3 adults and 4 kids. They politely declined. We started trekking down the road, still hopeful that someone would take pity on us and pick us up. It was starting to get dark, when a car did stop. Lo and behold it was the same car that had declined us earlier. They said we could squeeze in if they put all 4 kids in the far back of their SUV. The wife sat in the kid's car seat and off we went. They were Argentineans with the family now living in Uruguay which they loved and the Uncle living in Santiago - he was in charge of promoting Walmart in Chile! We had no idea where the road came out, but unbelievably it came out right on the street of our hotel!
