Day 4 - going to and arriving in Villarica
February 26, 2012
Early am flight. Hearing more English than normal - whole group of mostly guys and one woman on our little bus (think Dulles) to the plane. The woman has the aisle seat in our row. Well, it turns out the group is the band for Marc Anthony! They are touring all over Latin America, where Anthony is a huge star! Just had a show in Santiago - over 15000 in the audience. The woman - Alexandra Taveras - is the lead female singer in the band! Wonderful person. Very talkative given she had only 2 hours sleep the night before. We pretty much learned her whole life story - pretty interesting too.

Rented a car in Temuco - also quite the experience. First rent a car (that's the name of the company) has a quaint policy of charging you 3 times the total cost on your credit card and then crediting back 2/3 of it to the same credit card when you return the car safe and sound. Only problem was that our visa card had been stolen (well - virtually stolen). Someone in France created a counterfeit card and was joyfully charging away the day before we left! Fortunately, we discovered this before we left for Chile. Of course, the card was immediately cancelled. But, it was the same card we had used to reserve our rental car. It eventually got sorted out and off we went in our Hyundai with "mechanical" transmission - aka manual. What fun! We avoided the one speed trap on the very nice highway (Route 5) from Temuco to Villarica.

We are staying at a lovely B&B - Hosteria La . Unfortunately, we are seeing our first rain of the trip in the afternoon. Not to worry. We take a nap, enjoy Onzes with the best pisco sour of all time (made without sugar but sweetened naturally from some fruit or other). One of the owners is a organic gourmet. Then, after a short break, on to dinner, which was the best meal so far of the trip. Topped off with homemade ice cream and raspberry pie.

By the way, they have 2 dogs - one of which reminds us of Jake. HIs name is Pepo. He ls very friendly and smart but a little jealous if you pay any attention to their other dog, whose name I can't remember as I'm writing this. Will come back to.
