A new mission event called The Big Day of Serving (www.thebigdayofserving.com) is really starting to take off around the U.S. There's 11 locations in the Spring of 2012 and we are so excited to be able to bring this opportunity to many different cities. Basically The Big Day brings together tons of youth groups, and those they invite, for one day, to revitalize a neighborhood in need. This could mean picking up trash, pulling weeds, cleaning out an abandoned lot, painting over graffiti but basically - beautification. There are many studies that show crime increases when litter, graffiti, broken windows, etc. are apparent in a neighborhood. Just check out the Broken Windows Theory. en.wikipedia.org The Big Day is an event that changes lives by revitalizing neighborhoods, getting people out serving a community as well as an afternoon devotion that ties it all together so teens and other grow spiritually as well... Here is a story from last year:
One youth group worked all day cleaning up an empty, abandoned lot. They worked hard and when they were done there was now a clean, mowed, raked and beautiful lot that improved the look and feel of the whole neighborhood. As the group got back in the vans to drive away, they looked back and saw three excited kids coming out of a nearby house to play ball in the new, safe yard.
