Beautiful Huichilol Rugs
November 7, 2013
Mexican artist Elissa Medina brings native American Huichol tribe art into the 21st century. The young girl creates mesmerizing hand-made rugs following the old tradition of her ancestors. Sized 200x250 cm, these incredible pieces of carpeting take about 80 hours to make and there aren't two alike. The colour scheme is picked by the customers. Ms Medina's work reflects the dilemma of modern Mexico both trying to affirm its national identity and rick history and find its own place amongst the modern world. While traditional Huichol rugs were made of leather, the ones you see on the picture are made of wool felt. The material is certified by Oeko Text Standard and is 100% biodegradable. Moreover, carpet cleaning experts in Melbourne claim it is fire-resistant and naturally waterproof which makes it an excellent investment. To finish the project the artist needs more than 2.5 km of thread. The blue design you see on two of the pictures represented Ms Medina's work at the Abierto Mexicano de Diseno 2013 exposition in Mexico.
