Ocean Garbage From Hawaii to Japan
February 7, 2008
I was really saddened when I read about this today. They have discovered that about 100 million tons of waste is floating around in the pacific. The area now covers an area twice the size of the continental United States but its undetected from satellite imaginary as its located 10 meters below the surface. About 1 million seabirds and 100 000 mammals die every year from the garbage floating around. The world largest rubbish dump is held in place by swirling underwater currents (see illustration below).Article in Swedish (svd.se)Article in english (alternet.org)
