Portrait #1
November 18, 2007
I am beginning a little project of creating portraits of people of i know and don't know but who influence me some kind of way; folks who embody a unique style that permeate in everything they do. The first one is one my favorite surfers of all time: Brittany Quinn Leonard. Brittany has been on the scene for a long time and was surfing heavy single fins way before the movie 'seedling' made it the hot thing to do. She rides her board like a fairy and sews her own wetsuits. she follows her own path and will probably keep on doing so even when styles might change. roxy girl she is NOT. About 10 years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Brittany surf first at Rincon and then at the San Onofre Classic (where surfers only ride boards from the 60's). I was amazed at how she could surf those heavy boards with such grace and style. I got to meet her briefly and she signed a drawing that i did. there is a lot of talent now in the girl's longboarding circuit, but Brittany will always be a stand out for me; she is of another era, the epitome of southern california bohemia.
