Up Portland way..

Patrick and I went to Portland, Maine this weekend...finally. We stayed in an area called Munjoy Hill, and it really was a gorgeous place to stay: the views all around are of the ocean and there are plenty of interesting independent stores (unlike Boston where there is a chain store on every block). What was really cool was that it was a walkable city: it seemed that everybody was out and about, walking or on their bikes and out of their cars. Below are a few shots of some Portland blosson trees and some interesting features from an abandoned rail and boat yard near the harbour. (click the small pics to enlarge) barnacles from a lobster trap one of my favorite moments was seeing this hipster play his violin in the middle of a empty parking lot (I guess it there were good acoustics). It was nice to see someone acting so free within a public space. The highlight would have to been going to see some Roller Derby! This a sport that was popular in the 70's and is now having a resurgence. Though very American, I guess I would describe it as being very different from your typical sporting event: instead of your average sports fan, roller derby attracts all sort of indie/punk kids and the best about it is, all the athletes are women. Check out the Womens Flat Roller Derby site. oh.. and maine won, of course.
