Lounging In Lombok
January 12, 2011
1/12/11 – The 100 Year Monsoon:

The rain last night has subsided but the wind increased during the night to roughly hurricane force with gusts up to 50 MPH or so. The power has gone out 3 times but the hotel generators kicked in within seconds each time. Unfortunately the wifi does not reset when this happens so we are offline more than I expected. The ocean has 4-5 foot white caps and the waves are cresting at about 10 feet. They crash into the sea wall and send huge plumes of spray over the beach area near the pool. The entire beach in front of all of the hotels is white with foam and getting hammered by the waves. Palm fronds are on the ground everywhere. The boats to the Gilis are definitely not operating today. We may not get to Gili Trawangan this trip and we are not stressing about it. It is too nice here to worry, so instead I woke at 9 and immediately took a swim before I had even been able to open my eyes. I swam a few laps before resting on the side of the pool facing the water and watched the waves and could see the mountains on Bali through the low clouds.

We had breakfast on the beach again while it was calmer around 10. I will note that unlike American hotels whose food is to be avoided, the hotel chef does a great job and the food rivals some 5 star restaurants. I understand this is the case in most of the hotels here. This ain’t the gristly chicken fried steak at the Super 8!

Because of the wind and potential for rain we decided to stay local and just relax. Lina got a massage and we both walked to our other choice for a hotel – the Qunci Villas. On the walk there we stopped at the land between hotels where the outrigger fishing boats were parked on the sand. Too rough to fish today. We also passed about 10 goats laying on the side of the road lounging like us. There was a new born goat too who could not stand up yet. We got a tour and decided next time that we will try it. Beautiful layout and a newer hotel at same price. We had a drink at the bar and read the menu which convinced us to try them for dinner sometime. While we were there the wind came back full force blowing beach cushions around and people started to leave the pool area as a coconut fell on the deck. We were safe under a thatched hut.

Not much else to report other than I just woke from a (another) nap on the beach lounge chair and am planning to swim again after dinner. Lina found that the rock formation in the center of the pool has a cave in it with water jets like a hot tub. We sat in it earlier and it probably is very nice on a hot day to get out of the sun there.

PS: I forgot to mention something during our time in the village - they all think Emily is gorgeous. Lina has shared pictures of Em with them via email etc and they all want to be just like Emily – blond and pretty. It was cute to hear how much they like her without having met her yet.
