Santiago, Dia Dos
February 24, 2012
Today,we went to the Mercado Central (central market). There was a separate fish market, fruit market and flower market all in the same vicinity. In the afternoon, we visited the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. It is a very impressive place both architecturally and as a review of the history of the Pinochet coup d'etat in 1973 and his reign of 16 years, during which many in the oppposition were killed, tortured. Many people went 'missing' - most presumed killed. Very powerful story. Yet, once again, you wonder how normal people - soldiers -could commit such atrocities. The country seems totally recovered from that period, but it is good to see there is an effort to learn from it.

In the evening , we met an old friend, Veronica, who Barbara became friends with in the 70's when she visited Santiago for work several times. Veronica, now happily remarried to Steve, splits her time between Chile and the U.S. Steve and Veronica took us to to a swanky country club - the Prince of Wales Club. They are great people. Her youngest son is now in D.C. working for the Freer gallery for 12 months and we will try to get together with him.

A great day!
