Freedom Riders visit IUNorthwest

As part of its annual MLK observance, two individuals that participated in the 1961 Freedom Rides against interstate commerce discrimination spoke after the PBS movie was shown in Savannah Center. Diana Nash, who attended Tennessee State, was a featured speaker in the movie and in the Freedom Rides demonstrations. She along with Abraham Rasskoff, were sentenced to time in the infamous Lorman prison in Mississippi after being arrested by the Jackson police.

Little Rock Central High School

In August 1957 nine brave African American students attempted to enroll in Central High, the largest school west of the Mississippi. It took the National Guard plus a court order. The students were awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP and the Congressional Medal of Freedom.
